Post

Carles Viarnès

The end of the world has already happened. Timothy Morton says so, and adds that we can pinpoint the date precisely: the world ended in April 1784, when James Watt patented the steam engine. In a similar spirit, Joanna Zylinska writes that fearing the end of the world drives us into a state of terror and helplessness, and that we should develop new skills and arts to move away from the idea of the apocalypse. For her, we are also living after the end of the world, and learning to live in it means accepting the state of shared vulnerability in which we find ourselves and acting to take responsibility for it.

Post is a question in a bottle, cast into the ocean; an invitation to see beyond the collapse and the void that swallows the future. And, like any message adrift, it sways in a fluid time, where past and future mirror each other, contrasts dissolve, and things come to life.

For the staging of Post, I conceived a minimalist lighting design, and accompanied the musical performance with the silent presence of seven hacked toy dragons that can be remotely controlled.
